MENS CLUB NEWSLETTER

Playing golf by the rules is just part of the game. Using golf etiquette is just as important as following the rules. If you don't know about it, there is an etiquette reminder in the front of the 'Rules of Golf'. For the next few months, your newsletter will also carry a paragraph on the 'Rules' of Golf Etiquette.

USGA Handicap Rules

5-1 Acceptability of scores

Fair handicapping depends upon full, accurate information regarding a player's potential scoring ability as reflected by a complete record. Every golfer shall be RESPONSIBLE for returning all acceptable scores for handicapping purposes.

5-1A Scores to post

If a player plays from 9 to 12 holes the player would post a 9 hole score (for the first 9 holes). If a player plays 13 or more holes, player shall post an 18 hole score (estimates of unplayed holes depends on player's handicap). For example, an 18 handicap would post one over par for all unplayed holes. A 9 handicap would post par.

8-4 Failure to post

An NCGA/USGA handicap index shall be adjusted up or down if the player does not turn in all acceptable scores or otherwise does not observe the spirit of the handicap system. If a player fails to post an acceptable score, the handicap committee should post the score and a penalty score of the lowest score in the player's scoring record.

(v) Player manipulates round(s)

The handicap committee is duly responsible to identify those players who REGULARLY violate any of the handicap rules. If a player continues to violate the rules, the handicap committee is authorized and encouraged to consider withdrawal of the player's handicap index.

Your Men's Club Handicap Committee

For one year your men's Club handicap committee has reviewed well over 3,000 score cards. The rules of handicapping are in full force. After reviewing the scoring habits of our members, the Board would like to being to your attention these bad scoring habits:

  1. Failure to post a score (penalties will be assessed)
  2. Posting a score higher than recorded on the players card (penalties will be assessed). Players who post three or more scores over actual scores are kept on a list for further review. Such careless actions will result in a corrected score being posted. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR CARD AND SCORER. Scores are automatically recorded for men's club tournaments.
  3. There is no such thing as an 'X' hole. If you pick up your ball, record a number with an 'X' subscript. (as in 7x).
THANKS TO YOU WE ARE GETTING BETTER AND THE NUMBER OF ERRORS HAS GONE WAY WAY DOWN.
